Thermador Wall Oven Repair

Thermador single, double and combination wall ovens, from the S, C and CM ovens of the late 1990s to today's Masterpiece and Professional series. Most repairs are an element, the temperature sensor, a cooling fan, the self-clean latch or a control board, and on the older ovens the F-code narrows down where to look.

In short: a Thermador wall oven bakes from a lower element, broils from the ceiling and convects with a fan and its own element. On the S and CM ovens a cooling blower must run before the oven will heat, so an oven that lights up but stays cold is often a cooling fault.

Which Thermador wall oven you have

  • Current ovens. Masterpiece (ME and MED models) and Professional (PO and POD), in singles, doubles and combinations with a speed or steam oven.
  • Older ovens. The model starts with the series, S, C, CM or SEC, then the width (27 or 30) and a 1 for a single or 2 for a double. The last letter is usually the finish: B black, W white, S stainless. A CM302S is a 30-inch stainless double.
  • CM combinations. On the CM ovens of around 2000, the single CM301 and the upper cavity of the CM302 double combine microwave with convection and regular heat; the CM302's lower cavity is a convection oven.

On the CM ovens the data plate sits behind the cooling vent trim on the right; on many others, look along the frame with the door open. A photo of it and any code helps us check parts first.

How a Thermador wall oven is built

  • Heat. A bake element, hidden under the floor on the CM ovens, a broil element in the ceiling, and a convection element around the fan behind the back baffle. Self-clean runs the cavity at about 850°F.
  • Cooling with a proving switch. Blowers pull air through the chassis, and a paddle switch in their airflow must close before the elements get power. A high-temperature cutout shuts the oven down if the chassis overheats, and it should be reset only after a technician finds why it tripped.
  • Controls. A relay board switches the elements, fans, lights and latch; touch boards glued to the glass panel take your input.
  • The rest. A motorized self-clean latch, a sensor per cavity, a meat probe socket, halogen lights, and a heavy door on spring hinges.

What fails on a Thermador wall oven, most common first

Display normal, oven stays cold

What it usually is: the cooling side. A blower that has slowed or stopped, a paddle switch that no longer closes, a tripped cutout, or the relay that feeds the elements. CM ovens report F34 (upper) or F64 (lower). On some late-1990s S-series ovens, weak airflow to the switch can stop the heat with no code.

What you can check: whether you hear the blower when a mode starts, and that the oven's vents are not blocked.

What we do: test the blower, switch, cutout and relay, and find why the airflow fell short or the cutout tripped.

Bake or broil element burned out

What it usually is: an element that opened, often during or soon after a self-clean, so bake gets slow or broil stops. A shorted element can trip the breaker.

What you can check: which modes still heat, and how long an empty oven takes to reach 350°F.

What we do: measure each element at the relay board and replace the open one. See Thermador oven not heating.

Running hot or cold, or a sensor code

What it usually is: a sensor that has failed open or shorted, a cooked splice in its wiring, or a relay that sticks closed.

What you can check: an oven thermometer on the middle rack, read several times over 20 minutes after preheat.

What we do: test the sensor, its wiring and the relay; the sensor is replaced from inside the cavity.

Door will not lock, or stays locked

What it usually is: the latch motor or its lock and unlock switches, shown as F9 on an S single or upper oven (Fr on the lower oven of a double) and in the F50s and F80s on CM ovens. A CM oven also flashes dor if self-clean is set while it cannot read the latch; other modes keep working.

What you can check: after a clean, give the oven its full cooldown with the power on. Do not force the handle.

What we do: run the latch, test the motor and switches, and replace what failed.

Touch panel or display problems

What it usually is: a key the control reads as held down, a loose ribbon cable, boards that stop talking to each other, or a failed relay board or display.

What you can check: that Panel Lock or Sabbath is not on, then switch the oven's breaker off for a minute and back on.

What we do: read the stored codes, check the harnesses, and replace the failed board or panel.

Convection fan, lights and door

What it usually is: worn convection motor bearings or an open convection element, a halogen bulb or holder, sagging hinges, or a gasket hardened by self-clean.

What you can check: whether one light or both are out, and with the oven cold, gaps in the gasket.

What we do: replace the motor behind the back baffle, the lamp holder, the hinges or the gasket.

F-codes on older Thermador wall ovens

These meanings cover the S-series ovens of the late 1990s and the CM ovens of around 2000, and they vary by model and era. Masterpiece and Professional ovens use their own codes, which we read on site.

F2, F5S-seriesOver-temperature (F2) or the element safety monitor tripped (F5); usually an intermittent sensor or the relay boardSwitch the oven off at the breaker if it keeps heating, then call.
F7, FC, FFS-seriesA key reads as pressed (F7), boards not communicating (FC), or a bad sensor reading circuit (FF)Cycle the breaker; call if it returns.

How we repair a wall oven in finished cabinetry

  1. From the front first. Most parts are reached through the cavity, with floor and cabinet edges covered.
  2. Out of the wall when it must. On CM ovens the hidden bake element, the blowers and the upper convection motor are at the back or top, so the oven comes out onto padding, and we tell you first.
  3. Back in and tested. Every mode run, the door reveal checked, and a leakage test on any microwave combination.

Stay safe. A wall oven runs on a 240-volt circuit. If it keeps heating after you turn it off, switch it off at the breaker and call: that is usually a stuck relay. Do not pull the oven out yourself, and never run self-clean with a damaged gasket or a latch that misbehaves. On a CM combination, the microwave parts hold a dangerous charge even unplugged.

Repair or replace a Thermador wall oven

What failedOur usual advice
Element, sensor, blower, air switch, latch, hinges, gasket or lightsRepair. Wear parts, still available for most ovens.
Relay board, display or touch glassRepair when the part for your model is still made; we check before quoting.
Several boards plus a cracked glass panel on a 1990s ovenConsider replacing. Measure the cutout first, since a new oven must fit it and the circuit.

What a Thermador wall oven repair costs

The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair when you approve the written price. Elements, sensors and self-clean latches are ordered for your oven from a distributor, usually in a few business days; on a 1990s oven we first confirm the part is still made.

Thermador wall ovens: questions

My Thermador oven shows no error but will not heat. What is wrong?

Most often the cooling side: the elements only get power once the blower's airflow closes a switch, so a slow blower, a failed switch or a tripped cutout stops the heat, sometimes with no code.

What does F34 mean on a Thermador oven?

On the CM ovens it means the upper cooling fan was not proven running; F64 is the same for the lower oven, and the mode cancels after about 45 seconds. The blower, its air switch or the wiring is the usual cause.

My CM oven's cooling fan runs nonstop. Why?

A sensor fault on a CM oven keeps the cooling fan running, so look for F30, F31, F60 or F61 on the display and call. After ordinary cooking the fan should stop once the oven has cooled.

The door is still locked after self-clean. What should I do?

Leave the power on and let the oven cool completely, which can take an hour or more. If it stays locked or shows a door code, call; forcing the handle bends the latch.

Can you repair the microwave half of my Thermador combination oven?

Yes. The microwave parts of a CM oven sit in its top plenum and are tested with the charge drained. See Thermador microwave repair.

Is it worth repairing a Thermador wall oven from the 1990s?

Often, yes: elements, sensors, blowers and latches are worth replacing on an oven that old, while the part is still made. When the relay board or touch glass is no longer made, replacing the oven makes more sense.
