Thermador Ice Maker Not Working
A Thermador ice maker will not start until ICE is switched on, the freezer is cold, the bin is seated and the water filter is locked in, so many ice makers that seem dead are waiting on one of those. When a part has failed, it is usually the water supply or a valve, ice blocking the water inlet, the ice maker module, or on dispenser models the electronics in the door.
$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
In short: the checks below rule out a setting, the bin, the filter or a closed water valve in a few minutes; then allow a day. Write down any pattern the red light on the ice maker blinks. On dispenser columns, nothing dispenses unless the ice maker is on.
How a Thermador ice maker works
On freezer columns the ice maker sits behind a cover panel inside the freezer; on 36-inch bottom-freezers it is in the drawer. Water runs through the filter and a water valve, on later units a second safety valve too, then into a short inlet with a tiny heater that keeps it from freezing. The tray fills and freezes, then turns while a heater frees the cubes into the bin.
The seated bin presses a switch under the ice maker, and a light beam sees when the ice is high enough to stop. The 800-series 36-inch bottom-freezer makes about a hundred cubes in 24 hours into a bin of about four pounds. Dispenser freezer columns hold about eleven pounds in a hopper.
Owner checks before you call
- Confirm ICE is on. ICE must show on the display; press the ICE key if it does not. Sabbath switches the ice maker off, and Vacation should be off too.
- Check the freezer temperature. Ice production waits until the freezer reaches roughly 10°F, and on some models 0°F. If it is warmer, see Thermador refrigerator not cooling.
- Seat the bin. Push it fully back so it sits square; ice bags stacked against it can hold it out. On bottom-freezers built before mid-2007 the bin was hard to seat, and Thermador later added a magnetic latch.
- Lock the filter. With the filter missing or half turned, the ice maker will not start. Push the cartridge into its opening in the base as far as it goes and turn it clockwise until it stops. After a change, the filter reminder resets when SUPER and ICE are pressed together for three seconds (SUPER COOL and ICE on bottom-freezers).
- Open the water supply. Find the shutoff that feeds the refrigerator, usually under a nearby sink or behind a neighboring cabinet, and open it fully. A unit recently pushed back may have kinked its line.
- Give it time. After any change allow most of a day; the first batches may be small or stuck together.
What it usually turns out to be
Water not reaching the ice maker
What it usually is: a valve not fully open, a kinked line, an old saddle valve, or the small backflow protector at the hose inlet, which can flip under pressure and block the flow. The thin feed tube inside the unit can kink too; Thermador added an anti-kink sleeve from 2009 production.
What you can check: small, hollow or uneven cubes point at weak water, not a failed ice maker.
What we do: check flow and pressure where the line meets the unit, then trace back to the house valve before replacing anything.
Ice blocking the water inlet
What it usually is: a failed inlet heater, a valve weeping between fills, or a slipped gasket in the inlet cover. The opening ices over and the next fill has nowhere to go; you may see an icicle behind the ice maker or cubes frozen into a sheet.
What you can check: shine a light at the back of the ice maker for ice at the inlet, and leave any you find for us to thaw.
What we do: thaw the inlet, reseat the gasket, test the heater and watch for a dripping valve, since melting the ice alone brings it back within days.
Water valves
What it usually is: a coil that no longer opens, a screen choked with hard-water scale, or a valve leaking through. Bottom-freezers built before about March 2008 have a single valve; later ones add a safety valve in series, and older units with leaks or no ice can take a two-valve kit with a matching ice maker.
What you can check: no water at all, or too much: oversized cubes, a solid block, ice on the floor of the freezer.
What we do: test both valves and replace the failed one. A service light code of 3-1-3 or 3-2-3 points at a valve.
The ice maker module
What it usually is: the tray motor, heater, sensor and electronics are sealed in one assembly. On 36-inch bottom-freezers built from about 2008, and on many freezer columns, its red service light blinks one long flash, then three groups of short ones: a pattern starting with 1 usually means the cycle stalled, 2-1 or 2-2 a sensor, 3-1-2 or 3-1-4 the motor or heater. Meanings vary by model and era, and some codes are passing glitches.
What you can check: write the pattern down first. Then switch the unit off with its power key, wait a minute and switch it on, once. If the same pattern returns, it is real.
What we do: run the self-test and replace the assembly if it failed. The newer ice maker fits only units with the safety valve, which we check by FD code first.
Electronics and the link to the main control
What it usually is: later units give the ice and water system its own module in the compressor compartment. Bottom-freezer displays report it as E30 (tray motor or bin sensing), E31 (ice tray or water tank sensor) or E32 (lost contact with the main control); service light patterns starting 5-1 or 5-2 mean the supply voltage was out of range.
What you can check: the display. On some models E32 shows only after a press of ALARM OFF.
What we do: check connections and voltages between modules, then replace the one not responding. Other brands' codes are on error codes.
Thermador ice dispenser not working: T18ID and T24ID columns
An auger feeds cubes from the hopper, solenoids open the hopper flap and engage the crusher, and a heated flap keeps the chute from freezing. Water comes from a small pressurized tank in the door, held between about 35°F and 50°F.
- Nothing works. The dispenser is disabled while the ice maker is off, and its buttons wake about eight seconds after the door closes. Check ICE and the child lock, which a three-second press of LOCK toggles.
- Nothing works and the light is out. The cable across the hinge can break after years of swings. We check it and its channel before any module.
- Water but no ice. A jammed auger, a stuck hopper flap, or fused cubes. The Agitation key stirs the hopper and can free cubes that are starting to stick.
- Ice in the hopper, none at the chute. The dispenser flap or its motor.
- Cubes but no crushed ice. The crusher solenoid or blades.
- Ice but no water. A failed tank sensor or heater makes the control stop water so the tank cannot freeze and crack; otherwise, the dispenser valve.
For a real case, see Thermador Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Not Working, our Irvine job from September 2026, where a T18ID column needed a new dispenser flap, its motor and the ice maker water valve. More on these units: Thermador refrigerator repair.
Hard water, filters and ice that tastes off
Orange County water is hard, and scale narrows valve screens and the inlet, so cubes often shrink for a year or two before production stops. The control's filter reminder is built around a six-month interval, and keeping to it protects the valves as well as the taste. Stale-tasting ice after weeks of disuse means a film in the lines; we flush and sanitize them and fit a new filter, part of our refrigerator maintenance visit.
Stay safe. Water running where it should not? Shut the supply valve; the freezer keeps freezing without it. Keep fingers out of the ice maker and the chute while the unit has power, and no hair dryers or knives on ice inside the freezer.

Thermador ice maker not working: questions
Why does my Thermador show ICE but make no ice?
ICE only allows the ice maker to run. It still needs a cold freezer, a seated bin, a locked filter, water and a clear inlet. If those check out, its service light usually names the failed part.
Will a Thermador ice maker work without the water filter?
Not on the models covered here. A missing or loose filter keeps the ice maker from starting, so seat a cartridge fully before looking further.
How much ice should a Thermador make in a day?
On the 800-series 36-inch bottom-freezer, roughly a hundred cubes in 24 hours once the freezer is cold, less on the first day. A bin that never fills at all is a fault, not slow production.
What does the blinking red light on my Thermador ice maker mean?
It is the ice maker's own fault display: one long flash, then three groups, such as three, one, three. Write the numbers down; they tell us whether to bring a valve, a heater or a new ice maker.
Why does the ice from my Thermador taste bad?
Usually an overdue filter, or a unit that sat unused for weeks. A new filter and a flush often cure it; after a long idle the lines may need sanitizing.
Can you fix the ice maker, or does it have to be replaced?
The ice maker is one sealed assembly, so a failed motor, heater or sensor means a new one. Valves, the inlet heater, the filter housing and dispenser parts are separate repairs, and often what actually failed.
