Wolf Range Error Codes
A Wolf dual fuel range reports an oven fault by showing Err in the window of the oven knob and on the pivoting control panel, and it keeps the last seven codes in memory. Most of them lead to one of four places: the door latch, the oven sensor, the relay board or the link between the boards.
$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
In short: Err means the oven control logged a fault and saved a code. PF, Hot, SAb, Lo, CLn and a flashing Stone are messages, not faults. The burners have their own valves and spark system and usually keep working. Photograph the display before switching anything off, and turn the breaker off if the oven heats when it should not.
Which Wolf ranges these codes apply to
These codes belong to Wolf dual fuel ranges in the DF30, DF36, DF48 and DF60 widths: gas burners over an electric convection oven, a round oven knob with a small temperature window in its center, a mode ring around it, and a touch panel that pivots out of the front with the clock, timer and cook time keys.
- Both generations. The code list is the same on both. From serial 16000000 the door gasket mounting and rack guides changed; the surface burners changed later, from serial 17000000. See Wolf range repair.
- 48 and 60 inch ranges have a main oven and a smaller one, each with its own latch. Only one can self-clean at a time, and the other cannot cook meanwhile. That is by design.
- All-gas, induction and later models are built differently, and a later control may report faults its own way. If your display does not match this page, send us the model and serial.
The rating tag is under the control panel, above the oven door on the right. A photo of it and of the display helps us before a visit.
How the range tells you something is wrong
When the control logs a fault, Err appears in the knob window and in the cook time digits of the panel, and the range may sound an alarm. Behind it sits a two-character code from 01 to 0E. The control keeps the last seven in memory that survives a power cut.
A technician reads them in a service mode. We leave its key sequence out: that mode switches elements, fans and the latch motor on directly, and one key wipes every stored code.
Messages that look like faults and are not
| Code or display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PF | The power went out or the breaker was cycled | Turn the mode ring to any mode and back to OFF. |
| Hot, one long beep | The oven is hotter than the chosen mode allows, often Proof right after baking | Open the door and let it cool. Hot on a cold oven points to the sensor or its plug. |
| SAb | Sabbath mode; the oven holds temperature and most keys do nothing | Turn the ring to OFF. |
| Lo during preheat | The cavity is still under 150°F | Normal. |
| CLn | Self-clean is running and the door is latched | Wait. The latch lets go once the oven cools to around 300°F. |
| deH or PrF | Dehydrate or Proof is selected | Normal. |
| Stone flashing, with a beep | Bake Stone mode without the stone element plugged in | Turn the oven off and let it cool, then seat the stone element fully, or choose another mode. Only 30 and 36 inch cavities have it. |
| Heat light off when a mode is chosen | The cavity is still too hot to call for heat, or the light or panel failed | Let it cool. If it never lights on a cold oven, call. |
| Three chimes every 30 seconds | A timed cook finished and the oven switched itself off | Normal. |
One owner setting is easy to mistake for a fault: the temperature offset. These ovens let you shift the thermostat by up to 35 degrees either way, and an old offset makes every recipe run hot or cold with no code. Check with an oven thermometer first; see Wolf oven temperature off.
Stored error codes by system
The codes as the service documentation for these ranges describes them, in our own words. Meanings vary by model and era, and a code points to a circuit, not a part: a sensor code can be the sensor, its plug or the board that reads it.
Door latch
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | The latch motor was told to lock or unlock, and for a full minute the control never saw the switch confirming it arrived. Most often at the start or end of self-clean. | Let the oven cool and do not force the handle. Call if it stays locked cold or will not lock. See Wolf oven door locked. |
Temperature sensing
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 02 | Overheat: the oven ran far hotter than any cooking mode reaches, or hotter than a self-clean should | Turn the oven off. If it keeps heating, switch off the breaker. Call. |
| 03 | The oven sensor reads as an open circuit: sensor, lead or connection | The oven cannot regulate. Call. |
| 04 | The sensor reads as a short, usually a damaged sensor or pinched lead | Call. Restarting will not help. |
| 09 | The meat probe circuit reads as shorted | Push the probe plug fully home or remove the probe. If it returns with no probe in, the socket switch or wiring is at fault. |
Control boards and communication
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 07 | The pivoting panel and the control board stopped talking; the cable first, then the panel | Breaker off for about five seconds and on. If Err returns, call. |
| 08 | The control's memory failed its power-up self-check | An oven control fault. Call. |
| 0B | The control failed an internal calibration of its sensor input | An oven control fault. Call. |
| 0C | Contact with the oven control itself was lost | Usually the oven control. Call. |
Relay board and heating circuits
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 0E | Heat was switched on when nothing should be on. Usually a relay on the board that switches the elements, less often the element circuit. | If an element glows or the oven heats with the controls off, breaker off now. Call. |
A code that is not on this list: write it down exactly as shown, and we read it against the documentation for your serial before naming a part.
No code, but something is wrong
| What you see | What it usually is | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Knob display counts up or down by itself | The knob is resting a little off center | Give it a firm turn either way and release it. If the numbers keep moving on their own, the switch behind the knob needs replacing. |
| Panel and knob window dark | Most often a tripped breaker or a control that needs a restart, sometimes the knob not fully on its shaft | Check the breaker and press the knob firmly back on, then try a five-second breaker restart. |
| Convection fans run with the door open | Sabbath mode, or the door switch inside the latch assembly | Ring to OFF; if they still run, see convection fan problems. |
| Keys do nothing | Sabbath mode or a frozen control; less often a cable or the panel | Ring to OFF, then the breaker restart. |
| Griddle or French top sparks, then gives up | Its ignition board tries three times, then waits | Turn that knob off and on again. If it fails again, see burner not lighting. |
| Panel will not pivot out | Catching on the trim, or a failed panel | Do not pry it. A technician can re-center it. |
What the common codes turn out to be
A code tells us where to start; a meter confirms the part before anything is ordered.
01 after a self-clean: the latch assembly
What it usually is: the motorized latch: a small motor driving the hook, plus the switches that report locked, unlocked and door closed, all sitting above the hottest cycle the range runs. The same part can leave the door locked, the lights dark or the fans running with the door open.
What you can check: give the oven an hour or two to cool after a clean. Never pry the hook through the gap.
What we do: drive the latch both ways, test the motor and each switch, and replace the assembly if it fails. On a 48 or 60 inch range we first confirm which oven logged it.
03 or 04: the oven sensor
What it usually is: the sensor rod in the cavity, its lead, or its plug at the control. Self-clean heat is hard on all three, and without a valid reading the control stops heating.
What you can check: nothing inside. Note whether the code appeared during a clean or a bake.
What we do: measure the sensor against its specification and check the connection. Only a sensor that tests good sends us to the oven control.
07 or 0C: the boards stopped talking
What it usually is: on 07, the cable between the panel and the control board, then the panel. On 0C, usually the oven control.
What you can check: one breaker restart, and whether Err returns at once or later.
What we do: reseat and test the cable and the supply to the panel, then replace cable, panel or control in that order. The panel pivots every time it opens, so its connection is checked before any board is condemned.
0E or 02: a relay or a runaway oven
What it usually is: on 0E, the relay board, which switches each element; a relay stuck closed keeps one heating. On 02, the sensor reading high, or the oven control if the sensor tests good. A stuck relay can also push the oven past the limit.
What you can check: whether anything heats with the oven off. If so, breaker off and leave it off.
What we do: switch each element on in turn, measure them at the board, test the sensor, and check the high-limit safety. A shorted element can take out a new board, so both are tested first. A slow oven rather than a dead one is covered in Wolf oven not heating.
Stay safe. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside. If an element glows or the oven heats with the controls off, switch off the range's breaker. Never force a latched door. Skip key combinations from forums: the service mode runs elements by hand and erases the history. The range is heavy, held by an anti-tip bracket and fed by a flexible gas line, so leave moving it to us.
What a Wolf range repair costs
The $79 service call covers the trip and the diagnosis, reading the stored codes included, and is applied to the repair when you approve the written price, which does not change once work starts. Typical ranges for professional range repair:

Wolf range error codes: questions
What does Err mean on a Wolf range?
The oven control has logged a fault and saved a code from 01 to 0E. Photograph the display and call; we read the stored codes at the visit.
What is error 01 on a Wolf dual fuel range?
The latch motor ran, but the control never got the signal that the door had locked or unlocked. It is usually the latch assembly; let the oven cool and do not force the door.
What do Err 03 and Err 04 mean on a Wolf oven?
The oven sensor reads as an open circuit (03) or a short (04), so the control stops heating. We test the sensor and its plug first, and the control only if the sensor is good.
Why does my Wolf range show PF?
The power was interrupted. Turn the mode ring to a cooking mode and back to OFF; if PF keeps returning without an outage, have the supply and the control checked.
Why does the Wolf oven knob say Hot?
The oven is hotter than the chosen mode allows, most often Proof after baking. Open the door and let it cool; Hot on a cold oven points to the sensor or its connection.
Can I still use the burners when the oven shows an error?
Usually, yes. The top has its own valves and spark system. The exception is an oven that heats with the controls off: switch off the breaker and wait for us.
Can I clear a Wolf range error code myself?
Codes are cleared from the service mode after the repair, and clearing them first erases the history that points to the part. A breaker restart can wake a frozen display, but the stored codes stay.
Do the same codes apply to 48 and 60 inch Wolf ranges?
Yes, the same list covers the DF48 and DF60. Each oven has its own latch, so we check which one logged the code, and only one oven can self-clean at a time.
