Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Working
Many Sub-Zero ice makers that "stop working" are switched off, paused, or short of water. When something has really failed, it is usually the water valve, a frozen fill tube or the ice maker itself, and all three are ordinary repairs done in your kitchen.
$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
In short: confirm the ice maker is on and the unit is not in Sabbath mode, lower the wire arm by its tip, fingers clear of the blades, check the freezer is near 0°F, open the water valve fully and look at the filter date. Then give it a full day. On a Classic Series unit, a flashing ice cube icon points to a water problem; with the Service icon flashing too, the ice maker stays off until the fault is repaired.
What is normal for a Sub-Zero ice maker
A valve fills a mold with a few ounces of water, the freezer freezes it, a small heater loosens the cubes and a row of blades sweeps eight of them into the bucket. A wire arm then feels how full the bucket is; if ice holds the arm up, production stops.
Two pauses are built in. The control rests the ice maker for about 45 minutes after each batch, and it cuts power to it whenever the freezer door or drawer is open, plus a few minutes after it closes. So an empty bucket takes many hours to refill.
Owner checks before you call
- Is it switched on? Classic Series units show a single ice cube icon when the ice maker is on. The 600 and 700 series show the word ICE. Integrated models use the ice maker icon on the options screen, dark when active. Some units also have a small rocker switch near the ice maker.
- Rule out Sabbath mode. It turns off the ice maker and the dispenser. Classic units show SA and a small b; Integrated screens go dark with a Sabbath message.
- Check the arm and the bucket. The arm must hang down. A crooked bucket or a bag of ice on the shelf above can hold it up. Many 600 series units (the 601F, 611, 650, 680 and 690, later the 685 and 695) and 700 series tall units also sense the bucket and stop if it is not seated all the way back.
- Read the freezer temperature. If it is well above 0°F, that is the real problem; see freezer not freezing.
- Open the water valve fully and check the filter. The shutoff is often under the sink or in the next cabinet. An overdue filter slows the water; a new filter not turned or pushed fully home can stop it.
- Try MAX ICE. On Classic units it drops the freezer to about -5°F for 24 hours. If MAX ICE produces nothing, the problem is not demand.
What it usually turns out to be
With the settings right and the freezer cold, we check these in order.
Weak or interrupted water supply
What it usually is: a valve not fully open, a pierce-type saddle valve that has clogged, a line kinked when the unit was pushed back, or pressure too low to fill the mold in time. Sub-Zero asks for steady household water pressure at the unit, measured with the filter in place.
What you can check: small, thin or hollow cubes point at the water, not the ice maker.
What we do: measure the flow at the unit and, if the supply is the cause, say so before replacing anything.
Frozen fill tube
What it usually is: the short tube into the mold freezes shut, because its small heater failed or because a weeping valve lets water trickle in and freeze. The ice maker cycles with no water arriving, and there may be an icicle where the tube meets the mold.
What you can check: look behind the ice maker with a flashlight. Do not chip at the ice; the mold and tube crack easily.
What we do: thaw the tube, then test the heater and the valve, since clearing the ice alone only buys a week or two.
Water valve
What it usually is: a coil that no longer opens, or an inlet screen clogged with scale, common with Orange County's hard water. A valve that does not close fully does the opposite: oversized cubes, a solid block in the bucket, ice on the freezer floor. On Classic units the valve sits at the base behind the kickplate; on Integrated models it is at the top behind the trim panels.
What you can check: whether there is no water at all, or too much.
What we do: test and replace the valve with the water off and the floor protected. Many units carry separate ice maker and dispenser valves on one assembly, and we check which side failed.
The ice maker itself
What it usually is: a worn drive motor, a failed sensor or heater on the mold, or an internal switch. Signs are cubes stuck half out of the mold, a hum with no movement, or blades that keep turning with the bucket full.
What you can check: nothing inside it. Keep fingers away from the blades while it has power.
What we do: confirm the control is sending the right signals. The internal pieces are not sold separately, so a failed ice maker is replaced as an assembly.
Control, door switch or flow meter
What it usually is: if the freezer door switch reports the door open, the ice maker gets no power. Classic units also measure every fill with a flow meter; when the valve stays open far longer than a normal fill, the control stops the ice maker for a day, and after several of those in a row it keeps it off until repaired, with the Service and ice cube icons flashing together. On later 600 series and 700 series tall units, the same fault stores a code and lights SERVICE.
What you can check: what the display shows.
What we do: read the fault history, test the flow meter, the door switch and the control, and repair what caused the shutdown. See Service light on and Classic Series error codes.
Hard water, softeners and RO systems
Hard Orange County tap water scales the valve screen and the mold, so cubes slowly shrink. Sub-Zero's installation guidance advises against softened water for the ice maker, because salt from a struggling softener can damage it. Under-sink RO works if the pressure stays steady, usually with the built-in filter bypassed; its storage tank loses pressure as it empties, so cubes that are small only on busy days point there.
How it differs by series
- Classic Series (BI models, CL on current units): ICE MAKER and MAX ICE keys, metered fills and the filter behind the top grille. Before serial 4100000 the filter pushes in and pulls out, and removing it stops the water unless a bypass plug is fitted. See Classic Series repair.
- Integrated columns: the ice maker is switched from the touchscreen, the filter sits behind a door in the top trim, and removing it lets water bypass rather than stopping it. Integrated drawers with an ice maker use the ICE MAKER key on the drawer's own control panel. See Integrated repair.
- 600 and 700 series, PRO 48: the bucket switch on many 600 and 700 tall models, and 700 series drawer freezers that must close fully. On older units we check parts availability before you commit. See 600 series, 700 series and PRO 48.
Ice machines such as the UC-15I are covered on the Sub-Zero ice machine page and our built-in ice maker repair service; everything else we fix is on the Sub-Zero repair page.
Stay safe. If water is running into the freezer or onto the floor, close the supply valve; the refrigerator keeps cooling without it. No heat guns or sharp tools on ice in the freezer, and no fingers near the blades while it has power.
What the repair costs
The $79 service call covers the trip and finding which part of the water path failed, credited to the repair when you approve the written price. The rows that matter here are the water valve and the ice maker assembly.

Sub-Zero ice maker: questions
How long does a Sub-Zero ice maker take to start making ice?
Up to a day after it is switched on or the water is connected. Throw out the first few batches.
Why are my Sub-Zero ice cubes small or hollow?
Usually the water supply: a partly closed valve, an overdue filter or a clogged saddle valve. A unit that is not level can also do it.
Why is there a solid block of ice in the bucket?
Either cubes sat unused and fused, or the mold is overfilling from a weeping valve or a unit out of level. Empty the bucket; if the next batches come out oversized or wet, call.
Does opening the freezer stop the ice maker?
Yes, while the door or drawer is open and for a few minutes after, so a freezer opened constantly makes less ice.
What does a flashing ice cube icon mean?
On a Classic Series unit, the icon flashing alone says the unit or its water supply needs attention. With the Service icon flashing too, the control has switched the ice maker off after repeated overlong fills, and it stays off until the water fault is repaired.
My new Sub-Zero makes no ice at all. Is it broken?
Probably not. Classic units ship with the ice maker switched off, and the water line may not be connected or opened yet. Turn it on, open the valve and allow a full day.
Can the ice maker be replaced on the first visit?
Sometimes. Common parts are on the van; a Sub-Zero ice maker or valve for your model usually comes from a distributor in a few business days, and we tell you the lead time before you decide. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Sub-Zero Group.
