Viking Range Repair
Viking Professional ranges in gas and dual fuel, and the 30-inch 3 Series gas range. Most repairs are an igniter, spark module or valve switch on top, or an igniter, gas valve, sensor or fan in the oven, and they are usually done with the range where it stands.

In short: a Viking range is a gas top of valves, igniters and spark modules over a gas or electric oven. Ignition, on top or in the oven, fails most, then temperature, the fans and the self-clean latch.
How to tell which Viking range you have
The model and serial tag is under the control panel (open the oven door and look up), or on some ranges under the base. A phone photo of it helps: the model decides the parts, and the serial opens with the build date.
- Professional ranges. 30, 36, 48 and 60 inches wide, all-gas with a gas oven or dual fuel with an electric one.
- 3 Series. A 30-inch all-gas range: five sealed burners from 8,000 to 18,000 BTU, a hidden bake burner, a top broil burner and a convection fan. The model number contains RVGR3, as in RVGR3305B; color versions add a prefix such as C or BZ.
| Part of the range | All-gas oven | Dual fuel oven |
|---|---|---|
| Oven heat | Bake burner under the floor, broil burner at the top | Bake and broil elements, often a convection element |
| Lighting the oven | Spark module and two gas valves on the 3 Series; a glow-bar igniter on many older Professional ovens | Nothing to light; depending on the model, board relays or the knobs themselves switch the elements |
The top is the same on both. See also Viking wall oven repair and, for rangetops, cooktop repair.
Viking Professional ranges
The Professional line is the heavier, commercial-styled one, and many wider models add a griddle or char-grill. On most of them several burners share one spark module, so one knob can set every igniter clicking. Ignition and controls changed by era, so the parts depend on the model and serial, and before we quote an older range we check that they can still be had.
How a Viking range is built
- Burners and spark. Each burner has a cap, a head and an igniter, fed by a valve behind its knob with a switch that starts the spark. On the 3 Series a small spark module clips onto each valve, so a fault usually stays with one burner.
- 3 Series oven ignition. The module sparks, opens the bake or broil valve, watches for flame and locks out after its retries.
- 3 Series controls and convection. The control board reads where both knobs are set and checks a sensor in the cavity for the real heat. The rear convection fan stops when the door opens.
- 3 Series cooling and safety. The cooling blower is switched by oven temperature: it runs once the cavity passes about 250°F, and after you switch off it runs only while the oven is above about 300°F. A high-limit switch cuts the oven control if the control area overheats. Self-clean versions lock the door with a motorized latch for a cycle of about three hours.
What fails on a Viking range, most common first
A burner clicks or will not light
What it usually is: food or cleaner on the igniter, water after a boil-over, an off-center cap, a cracked igniter or a loose wire. Clicking that goes on with the knob off usually means moisture in a valve switch, or a switch that has failed closed.
What you can check: with the top cool, lift the cap and head, brush the igniter clean, let it dry and reseat the cap flat. If the clicking will not stop, switch off the breaker for a day.
What we do: check the spark at each igniter, then test the wire, switch and module. More in Viking burner not lighting.
The gas oven will not light
What it usually is: on the 3 Series, residue on the oven igniter, a gas valve coil that no longer opens, the spark module, or the knob and control signals that call for heat. If broil works and bake does not, the fault is on the bake side alone. On older Professional ovens it is most often a weak glow-bar igniter, which glows but never gets hot enough to open the gas valve.
What you can check: that the top burners and the oven light work, then try bake and broil separately. If it clicks without lighting, turn it off and air the kitchen.
What we do: read the spark module's fault light where the module has one, measure the valve coils, knobs and sensor, and confirm gas is reaching the oven valve. See Viking oven not heating.
The oven runs hot or cold
What it usually is: a drifting sensor, a sensor wire pinched against the frame, or a temperature knob whose readings no longer match its marks.
What you can check: an oven thermometer on the center rack, read after twenty to twenty-five minutes, which is about four heating cycles.
What we do: measure the sensor and its wiring, and the knob values the board receives.
The convection fan is silent or noisy
What it usually is: a worn motor, a loose blade, a board relay or the door switch.
What you can check: run convection bake with the door shut and listen for a scrape that changes with the fan.
What we do: replace the motor or blade from inside the cavity, or the relay or switch feeding it.
The oven is dead but the top still works
What it usually is: the high-limit has opened and cut power to the oven control, often because the cooling blower stopped, or the sensor, a knob, the spark module or the board has failed.
What you can check: the breaker, and whether you heard the blower before the oven died.
What we do: test the high-limit, blower and board power; the 3 Series blower means moving the range forward.
Self-clean will not start, or the door stays locked
What it usually is: the latch motor or a switch that tells the control where the latch is. If the cooling fan does not run during a clean, cancel the cycle.
What you can check: let the oven cool fully, then turn both knobs off and on. Never pry the door.
What we do: test the latch motor and switches and replace the latch if needed.
What the range tells you
The 3 Series self-clean control has no display, so it blinks the cycle and clean lights on the front panel. These patterns are for that control only; meanings vary by model and era.
| What the lights do | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clean light blinks about once a second, cycle light off | The control has lost track of the door latch: motor, switch or wiring | Turn the oven off, leave the door alone, call |
| Cycle light blinks about once a second, clean light off | The oven sensor reads open or out of range, often the sensor or its wire | Call; the oven will not heat properly |
| Clean light steady, cycle light flashes two, three or four times, then pauses | The control has found a fault in itself (two or three flashes) or lost the convection fan's speed signal (four flashes) | Count the flashes, turn the oven off and call |
On the RVGR3305 and RVGR33015B the oven spark module, between the rangetop and the oven, also has its own fault light, read with the control panel off; the RVGR33025B module has none.
Stay safe. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside, without touching switches. Do not remove the panels or slide the range out: it is heavy, held by an anti-tip bracket and fed by a flexible gas line. Self-clean fumes can harm pet birds; move them away and open a window.
Repair or replace a Viking range
| What failed | Our usual advice |
|---|---|
| Igniter, spark module, valve switch, sensor, convection motor, latch, hinges or gasket | Repair. Wear parts, and most are still made. |
| Oven gas valve, regulator or cooling blower | Repair. Any gas fitting that is opened is leak-checked before the range goes back. |
| Oven control board or a knob assembly | Usually repair, once the part and its lead time are confirmed. |
| Several failures on an older range, a rusted burner box, or controls no longer made | Consider replacing. A new range has to fit the opening, the hood and the gas supply. |

Viking ranges: questions
Why does my Viking oven read too hot right after preheat?
On the 3 Series the first heating cycle overshoots on purpose, then the oven settles. Check with a thermometer after twenty to twenty-five minutes; if it is still well off, the sensor or knob needs testing.
Why did the flame go out on convection broil?
That is how the mode works on the 3 Series: about three minutes of flame, about a minute of fan alone, then flame again. On plain broil the flame should stay on until the oven reaches its setting.
Why is a fan running when the oven is off?
That is the cooling blower protecting the controls while the oven cools, and on the 3 Series it can start by itself after you switch off from a hot oven. If it never stops, or stays silent through a hot bake, have it checked.
Does a Viking range have to be pulled out for repair?
Most repairs are done from the top, behind the control panel or inside the oven. On the 3 Series, the oven gas valves, the regulator and the cooling blower are reached from the back (the blower also needs the top lifted), so for those the range comes forward over floor protection. Professional ranges vary by model.
Do you repair Viking dual fuel ranges?
Yes. The top is the same gas system. The oven heats with elements, switched by a control board or by the knobs themselves depending on the model; the Viking wall oven page covers the same kinds of parts.
