Microwave Drawer and Built-In Microwave Repair
Microwave drawers under a counter or a wall oven, built-in microwaves finished with a trim kit, and speed ovens that add convection to the microwave. Most repairs are the drawer drive, a door or drawer switch and the fuse it protects, the magnetron and its high-voltage parts, or the control, and any repair that touches the door, a switch or the high-voltage side ends with a leakage test.

In short: a microwave drawer is a microwave on a motorized slide, so it fails two ways: the drawer will not move, or the oven will not heat. A drawer that stalls is usually the drive or its position switches. A unit that lights and runs but leaves food cold has a high-voltage fault. One that is completely dead usually blew a fuse on purpose because a switch stuck. None of it is owner work: the high-voltage parts hold a dangerous charge after the power is off.
What we repair
- Microwave drawers. 24 and 30 inch drawers under a counter, in an island or below a wall oven, from Wolf, Thermador and the other luxury brands. Many drawers sold under different brand names share a similar layout, so the diagnosis carries across badges.
- Built-in microwaves. A microwave in a wall cabinet or above a wall oven, finished with a trim kit, from Monogram, Thermador, Dacor and others. See Monogram wall ovens and microwaves.
- Speed ovens and convection microwaves. A microwave with a convection element and fan, from Thermador, Miele, Dacor and others. The oven side is covered on wall, steam and speed oven repair.
On most drawers the rating plate is visible with the drawer fully open; on a built-in it is usually on the frame inside the door. A photo of the model and serial lets us check the parts and their lead time before the visit.
How a drawer differs from a countertop microwave
- A drive instead of a door. A small motor turns a gear along a toothed rack, and switches at each end of the travel tell the control where the drawer is. Pushing or pulling it by hand is only for a power outage, and then slowly.
- A safety chain. Several switches must agree the drawer is shut before the oven will heat. If one sticks, another blows a fuse on purpose, so a blown fuse is a message, not the fault.
- Power by cycling. On most drawers, power below full is made by switching the magnetron on and off, and each start needs a couple of seconds to warm up, so a hum that comes and goes on half power is normal. Units with an inverter lower the power steadily instead.
- The installation matters. Wolf's drawers call for their own grounded 120-volt circuit, an anti-tip block, a cabinet floor that carries about 100 pounds, and at least 2 inches below a wall oven. A floor that sags or an anti-tip block left out can show up later as a drawer that binds or pulls forward.
Owner checks first
- Rule out settings. Control lock disables the pads; on many drawers you hold its pad about three seconds. Demo mode lights up and counts down but never heats. After an outage, the clock may need setting before anything works.
- Clear the path. Crumbs on the drawer guides, a utensil behind the drawer or a towel on the handle can stall the drive. Wipe the guides with a dry cloth.
- Wipe the cavity. A soft damp cloth on the walls and the waveguide cover, no abrasives, and never take the cover off.
- Test the heat. A cup of water for one minute on high should come out clearly hot.
- Check the breaker. Drawers plug into an outlet inside the cabinet, so use the breaker for a restart: off for 30 seconds, then on. Do not reach in behind the unit.
What fails, most common first
Drawer will not open or close, or stops partway
What it usually is: a stripped drive gear or rack, often after the drawer was forced by hand, a position switch out of adjustment, a tired motor, or slide rails that bind.
What you can check: nothing in the path, and the control lock off. Use the pads only.
What we do: test motor and switches, replace the gear, rack or motor, and set the switches so the drive stops where it should.
Runs but does not heat
What it usually is: the magnetron or the high-voltage parts that feed it, a power board on some models, or a door or drawer switch that lets the light, fan and timer run while the heat stays off.
What we do: discharge the capacitor, test each part, replace the failed one, and time a water test for output. Our job GE Monogram Microwave Not Heating: Magnetron Fix (July 2026, Orange County) is a typical example.
Completely dead, or the fuse keeps blowing
What it usually is: the fuse that guards the door switches, blown because a switch stuck or a door or drawer sits out of line, a fuse on the power board, a board hit by a surge, or no power at the outlet. A new fuse alone just blows again.
What we do: find out why the fuse went, replace worn switches rather than adjust them, then fit the fuse and run a leakage test.
Sparks or arcing inside
What it usually is: a waveguide cover soaked with grease or burned through, metal or metallic trim in the cavity, a chipped cavity coating, or a failing magnetron.
What you can check: stop using it, take out any metal, and wipe the cover gently. If the cover or the cavity coating shows a burned spot, or it sparked with nothing metal inside, leave it off and call.
What we do: replace a burned cover, repair the cavity coating where possible, and test the magnetron.
Pads ignored or the display acting up
What it usually is: a worn key pad or control board, or a door or drawer switch out of line, which makes the control think the oven is open and ignore Start. Dacor's own troubleshooting lists the interlock as a cause of an odd display.
What we do: test the switches first, then the pad against the board, and replace the part that failed.
Uneven heating, turntable stopped or sensor errors
What it usually is: on built-ins, a turntable motor or its coupling; on drawers, the stirrer motor that spreads the energy. ERROR in sensor modes is often the load or the timing: wait two minutes after power returns, and do not open the drawer early in the cycle. If it errors on every load, the humidity sensor or board has failed.
What we do: test the motor or sensor with a water load and replace it.
Shuts off mid-cycle
What it usually is: a thermal cutout opening because the cooling fan failed or the vents are blocked.
What we do: test fan, cutout and airflow, and replace what failed. See Wolf microwave drawers for one line in detail.
Stay safe. Never open the outer case: the capacitor or inverter can hold a lethal charge even unplugged. Stop using a unit that sparks, smells of burning, or whose drawer or door no longer closes firmly. Do not lean on an open drawer or store things in it.
How a visit works
- Call or book online. The brand, the model if you can find it, and what it does. You talk to a technician.
- Out of the opening. A drawer slides out onto padding once the screws inside its frame are out; a built-in comes forward after its trim kit is removed. Cabinet and floor are protected.
- Diagnosis and written price. High voltage discharged, parts tested. The $79 service call covers it, and the written price does not change once work starts. Magnetrons, switch sets and drive parts for the luxury drawers usually arrive from the distributor in a few business days, and we give you the lead time with the written price.
- Tested before we leave. A leakage survey with a meter after any door, drawer, switch or magnetron work, a timed water test, and several open and close cycles back on the anti-tip block.
- Warranty. Parts and labor are covered, and a return for the same fault within 90 days has no service-call fee.
What microwave repair costs
Once you approve the written price, the $79 visit comes off the repair. Usual ranges for drawers, built-ins and speed ovens:
Microwave drawer and speed oven repair
| Repair | Typical price, parts and labor |
|---|---|
| Drawer motor or drive mechanism | $400 to $800 |
| Door switch set | $300 to $550 |
| Magnetron | $450 to $800 |
| Control board | $550 to $1,000 |
Typical Orange County ranges for parts and labor. The $79 service call is applied to any of them. Parts that ship from the manufacturer and older or discontinued models can run higher. You get the exact written price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.
For the convection side of a speed oven, see wall oven repair. The full list is on pricing, and other appliances on all services.

Microwave drawers and built-ins: questions
My drawer opens and closes but will not heat. Is that the drive?
Usually not. The drive and the heating side are separate, so a drawer that moves but leaves food cold points at a switch, the high-voltage parts or the control. We test those before we price anything.
Is it normal for my microwave to hum on and off at half power?
On most drawers, yes. Lower power levels are made by switching the magnetron on and off, so the sound comes and goes; inverter models lower the power steadily instead. A constant loud buzz with no heat is a fault.
What is the panel inside the cavity, and why did it spark?
That is the waveguide cover, where the energy enters the cavity. Grease baked onto it can arc; wipe it gently and never remove it. If it is burned through, it has to be replaced.
Can I replace the blown fuse myself?
No. The fuse blew to protect you, usually because a switch stuck, and reaching it means opening the high-voltage compartment. The cause has to be fixed and the unit leakage-tested.
Is a microwave drawer worth repairing?
Usually, when the drive or a switch failed. For a magnetron or board on an older drawer, we price the repair against a new drawer of the same width before you decide.
Do you check for microwave leakage after a repair?
Yes. After any work on the door, drawer, switches or magnetron, we survey around the seal with a leakage meter before the unit goes back into use.
Why will my microwave drawer not open after a power outage?
Many drawers show a prompt when power returns and want Stop/Clear touched or the clock set before they work normally. If it still will not move with power on, do not force it against the drive; call.
