Miele Oven and Range Repair

Miele HR ranges in gas, dual fuel and induction, plus built-in wall ovens, steam ovens and speed ovens: most repairs are a burner electrode, an oven igniter or element, a cooling or convection fan, the self-clean lock, the temperature sensor or a control board. When a part sits behind the cavity, the range or oven comes forward on padding, and we protect the floor and cabinetry.

In short: on an all-gas Miele HR range, the usual calls are a burner that keeps re-lighting, an oven that will not light, a cooling fan, the self-clean lock and the temperature sensor. Wall, steam and speed ovens use similar electronic controls, so fans, sensors and boards are common repairs on them too. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Miele.

Which Miele oven or range do you have

The data plate is usually on the frame around the oven opening, visible with the door open; a photo of it tells us which parts fit. On a range the model starts with HR and four digits that tell us the generation, the fuel, the width and the cooktop, so an HR 1134 is a 36-inch all-gas range with six burners. G or LP on the plate says natural gas or propane. Induction tops are covered on Miele induction cooktop repair.

  • Wall ovens. Single built-in ovens, often stacked with a steam or speed oven. From about 2012 Miele graded its lines Prestige, Premium and Reference.
  • Steam and combi-steam ovens. A pump feeds water from a container, or on plumbed US models through an inlet valve, to a steam generator outside the cavity.
  • Speed ovens. A compact convection oven with a microwave built in.

How a Miele all-gas range is built

  • Burners. Each burner has its own knob, valve and ignition electrode. The electronics sense each flame by the small current it carries and relight it if it goes out.
  • Oven heat. A gas burner in the ceiling for broil and one under the floor for bake, each with its own glow igniter and gas valve, plus two convection fans on the back wall.
  • Cooling. Two cooling fans pull air through the chassis to protect the electronics and your cabinets, and they keep running after cooking until the oven has cooled down.
  • Self-clean. The oven runs far hotter than any cooking setting, so a motor-driven latch locks the door at the start and releases it only after the oven has cooled.

What fails on a Miele range or oven, most common first

A burner that clicks and re-lights while you cook

What it usually is: the control no longer senses the flame, so it sparks again. A wet or dirty electrode, food on the burner head, a crooked cap, a draft from a window or a strong hood, or a cracked electrode with a chafed wire.

What you can check: with the top cold, wipe the electrode tips dry and reseat heads and caps with their notches lined up, the right size on each burner. A healthy flame is blue with small yellow tips and does not lift off.

What we do: clean or replace the electrode, check that each burner relights by itself when blown out on simmer, and leak-test any fitting we touched. See professional range repair.

Oven will not heat, or self-clean fails

What it usually is: on a gas range, the bake burner's glow igniter, its gas valve, or the control's output to them. A clean cycle that cannot reach temperature points at the same three parts. On an electric wall oven: a bake, broil or convection ring element, the temperature sensor, or the power board that switches them.

What you can check: that the breaker is on and, on a gas range, that the top burners light, which shows gas is reaching it.

What we do: test each igniter, burner or element from the control and replace the one that failed.

Door stays locked, or will not lock

What it usually is: the latch motor, one of its two switches, or a loose connector.

What you can check: after a clean, give the oven a full hour to cool. Never pry the door.

What we do: test the motor and switches and replace the failed part in place. See also wall oven repair.

Cooling or convection fan

What it usually is: worn bearings, a stopped motor, a loose plug or impeller. A dead cooling fan lets heat soak the boards and cabinetry.

What you can check: a fan running on after cooking and then stopping is normal. Grinding, or a fan that never runs, is not.

What we do: test each fan at every speed, replace the motor or impeller and clear the fault memory.

Temperature off, sensors and boards

What it usually is: a shorted or open temperature sensor, two sensors that disagree, a cable between the display and power boards, or a board. Also check the owner temperature adjustment in the settings menu, which is easy to forget.

What you can check: an oven thermometer on the middle rack, read a few times after preheat.

What we do: compare the control's reading with our meter, read the fault memory, and replace the sensor or board once the part for your model is confirmed.

Fault codes on the HR 1134 all-gas range

From Miele's documentation for this model, in our words. Meanings vary by model and era.

CodeWhat it meansWhat to do
F05, F06Oven temperature sensor shorted or openCall; usually the sensor or its wiring.
F23Self-clean did not get hot enough in timeCall; bake igniter, valve or burner.
F32, F33Latch did not lock, or did not release, within about ten minutesLet it cool, do not force the door, call.
F57Cooling fan not turningStop using the oven until it is checked.
F60Electronics too warm, stored but not shownA fan or blocked ventilation; we find it in the memory.
F134, F263Temperature far above normalSwitch off at the breaker, let it cool, call.
F235The two control boards lost contactCall; a cable or a board.
F260, F265Sensors disagree, or an internal protective faultCall.

Wall ovens, steam ovens and speed ovens

  • Wall ovens fail mostly at an element, the cooling fan, the self-clean latch, the sensor or a board, plus gaskets, hinges and bulbs.
  • Steam and combi-steam ovens count cycles toward descaling and remind you when it is due. In hard Orange County water, put it off and scale reaches the pump and steam generator. See our steam oven descaling guide.
  • Speed ovens add a magnetron and door interlocks. After a microwave program the cooling fan runs until the door is opened, then stops a couple of minutes later, which is normal. See wall, steam and speed oven repair.

Things that look like faults and are not

  • Display lit but no heat. Demo mode lights everything and heats nothing; switch it off in the settings menu.
  • Dark display, everything else working. Often the clock display switched off in settings. A lock symbol means the keys are locked.
  • Burners during a power cut. If the power goes out while burners are lit, turn them off: the range cannot relight a flame that blows out, and gas keeps flowing until the knob is off.
  • Knobs. Turn burner knobs counterclockwise to light; forcing one clockwise past Off can damage the valve assembly.

Stay safe. If you smell gas, do not touch switches or the range: leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Do not pull a Miele range out yourself; it weighs several hundred pounds, is held by an anti-tip bracket and is connected to gas.

Repair or replace

Electrodes, igniters, sensors, fans, latches, gaskets and hinges are wear parts: repair. A gas valve or a board is usually worth it once the part is confirmed. Several boards plus cracked glass on an older oven is when we suggest pricing a replacement.

What a Miele oven or range repair costs

The service call is $79. It covers the trip and diagnosis and is applied to the repair when you approve the written price. Igniters, elements, sensors and boards for an HR range or wall oven usually come from a distributor or Miele in a few business days, and we give you the lead time before you decide.

Miele ovens and ranges: questions

How do I read my Miele range model number?

The four digits after HR give the generation, the fuel, the width and the cooktop. An HR 1134 is a 36-inch all-gas range with six burners.

Why does a burner on my Miele range keep clicking after it lights?

The control cannot sense the flame and keeps relighting it. A wet or dirty electrode, a crooked cap or a draft is the usual cause; a cracked electrode needs a technician.

My Miele oven door is still locked after self-clean. What should I do?

Let it cool for an hour. If it stays locked, or shows F33 on an HR range, the latch wiring, the latch motor or one of its two switches is at fault. Do not pry the door.

Why does the fan keep running after I turn my Miele oven off?

That is the cooling fan protecting the electronics and cabinetry. It stops by itself once the cavity has cooled; a fan that never stops, or grinds, needs a look.

Do you repair Miele steam ovens and speed ovens?

Yes: pumps, steam generators, scale and boards on steam ovens, and magnetrons, interlocks and fans on speed ovens.

Does a Miele range have to come out for a repair?

Not for burner, electrode or knob work. Igniters, oven burners and some fans sit behind the cavity, so the range comes forward with the gas disconnected, then is reconnected and leak-tested.
