Sub-Zero Designer and Integrated Column Repair

Integrated columns, tall units and drawers hide behind your cabinetry, with the compressor and condenser at floor level behind the toe-kick grille. Nearly every repair is done from the front, with the unit left in its opening and the custom panels left on the doors.

$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.

In short: the usual faults are a condenser choked with floor dust, hinge wear from heavy panels, fans and freezer defrost, and the ice and water system. The touchscreen keeps a fault list you can read yourself.

Which Integrated unit do you have

From outside, panel-ready columns look alike, so we identify yours from a phone photo of the rating plate.

  • IC, Integrated Column: mostly all-refrigerator or all-freezer columns 18 to 36 inches wide, often installed in pairs, plus the 24 inch IC-24C and IC-24CI combination column. An IC-30R is a 30 inch refrigerator column; an IC-24FI is a 24 inch freezer column with an ice maker.
  • IT, Integrated Tall: 30 or 36 inches wide, as a refrigerator, a freezer, or a combination with the refrigerator on top and two freezer drawers below (IT-30CI, IT-36CI).
  • ID, Integrated Drawers: refrigerator, freezer or combination drawers under a counter or island. They fail much like the columns; other undercounter models are on the undercounter page.
  • After the width: R is refrigerator, F freezer, C combination, I an ice maker, ID at the end (as in IC-30RID) an internal water dispenser, and LH or RH the hinge side.

The early 27 inch columns, IC-27R and IC-27F, have push keys, a small LCD and two-digit codes, much like the late 700 series. Later IC, IT and ID models use a touchscreen with a stored fault list. The newest units carry Designer model numbers starting DEC for a column and DET for a tall unit, such as DEC3050R. A model starting 700 or 736 is the earlier line (see 700 series repair); every other line is on the Sub-Zero repair page.

How an integrated column is built

  • Machinery at the base. Compressor, condenser, fan and drain pan sit on a unit tray behind the kickplate and grille. On most models the tray slides forward, so we reach the sealed system without moving the unit; the 18 inch freezer column is the exception.
  • One appliance per column. Each column has its own compressor, controls and sensors. A refrigerator column beside a freezer column is two appliances sharing a wall.
  • Combinations differ. The IT tall combinations run two compressors, one per section. The 24 inch combination column uses one variable speed compressor and a refrigerant valve that sends cooling where it is needed.
  • Two kinds of defrost. Freezer sections melt frost with a heater on a schedule the control adjusts to how the unit is used. Refrigerator sections have no heater and defrost during the off cycle, with the fan moving air over the coil.
  • Watched fans and sensors. The board tracks every evaporator fan's speed and a cabinet and coil sensor in each zone, and logs a fault when one misbehaves.

What fails on Integrated units, most common first

Condenser starved at floor level

What it usually is: the condenser breathes through the toe-kick grille, right where floor dust, pet hair and mop lint collect. A rug edge or a tight decorative toe-kick does the same. Freezer columns show it first.

What you can check: with the breaker off, vacuum the grille slots with a brush attachment and keep the toe-kick clear.

What we do: remove the kickplate, clean the coil and fan, check the air path and confirm temperatures recover. See the condenser cleaning guide.

Doors, hinges and the door switch

What it usually is: heavy custom panels wear the hinge and closer, so doors sag, stop pulling shut or rub the neighboring column. The gasket can work loose at a corner. The door switch rides on the top hinge, and when it drifts the control thinks the door is open: the light stays on, the fan and ice maker stop, and the alarm sounds.

What you can check: from halfway open the door should swing closed and seal on its own. Look for a folded gasket and for a light or alarm that stays on with the door shut.

What we do: adjust or replace hinge, closer and switch, refit the gasket without removing the panel, and check level and reveal. See door not closing.

Evaporator fans and freezer defrost

What it usually is: a worn fan motor, or a freezer defrost part (the heater, the thermal switch that ends each defrost, or the coil sensor) that failed and let frost pack the cooling coil. Meltwater that refreezes in the drain backs up into the bottom drawer or reaches the floor at the kickplate. Heavy frost in a refrigerator section usually means a door left ajar or a fan problem.

What you can check: frost on the back wall, ice in a freezer drawer, water at the toe-kick. Keep food off the rear vents, and do not chip at ice.

What we do: read the fault list, test the fan and defrost parts, clear the drain and confirm the next defrost. See frost buildup.

Ice maker and water

What it usually is: a closed supply valve, an overdue filter, a water valve that sticks, a frozen fill tube or a worn ice maker. Some of it is normal: the ice maker pauses 45 minutes after each harvest, stops while the freezer is open, and is off in Sabbath mode.

What you can check: the ice maker icon on the options screen, Sabbath mode off, a filter changed in the last year (it sits behind a small door in the top trim), and the supply valve open.

What we do: test the water flow, the valves and the ice maker, and replace what failed. Hard water is tough on these valves. See ice maker not working.

Sensors, control board and touchscreen

What it usually is: a failed temperature sensor, a board relay, or lost communication between board and screen. If a temperature sensor dies, you see EE where that section's temperature should be, with the service icon flashing. The section keeps cooling on a fixed timer, so food usually stays cold, but book a visit soon.

What you can check: the information screen under Settings lists stored errors and the serial number without a password. Photograph it before you call.

What we do: read the fault history, test the part and replace it. Code meanings are on the Integrated error codes page.

Sealed system: compressor, inverter or leak

What it usually is: a compressor that no longer pumps, a failed inverter on a variable speed model, a leak or a restriction. It is the least common, and it hits one column or section.

What you can check: nothing safely. If the grille is clean, the fans run and the section still runs warm, call.

What we do: rule out the inverter, relay and wiring, confirm with pressure and temperature readings, then repair in-house with LOKRING or brazed joints. See sealed-system repair.

How we service a column in place

  1. On the phone. The model, which section is acting up, and what the screen shows.
  2. Floors and panels protected. Floors are covered before we start. When a hinge must be replaced, the door and its panel come off together onto padding.
  3. From the front. Kickplate and grille off and the tray forward for the sealed system; fans, sensors, heaters and the ice maker from inside.
  4. Pulling the unit is a last resort. Integrated units are anchored to the cabinets against tipping, so we pull one only when nothing else works.
  5. Parts and timing up front. Integrated parts are model-specific and usually arrive from a distributor in a few business days.

Repair or replace an Integrated unit

Fans, sensors, defrost parts, valves, hinges and ice makers are straightforward repairs. The sealed system is the harder call, and on a newer unit Sub-Zero's warranty may still cover it (see the questions below). Outside warranty, a compressor or leak repair on a column with a sound cabinet and good door hardware is usually worth it, because a replacement has to fit the same opening and accept your existing panels. See the repair or replace guide.

Sub-Zero Integrated and Designer: questions

Can you repair an integrated column without taking it out of the cabinets?

Yes in most cases: the compressor and condenser are reached through the kickplate and grille, and on most models the unit tray slides forward. If a job needs the unit pulled, we say so first.

One of my two columns is warm and the other is fine. Why?

Each column is a separate appliance, so the fault is in the warm one alone. Check its grille and door seal first, the usual causes.

Where is the model number on an IC-30R or another Integrated unit?

On a column, open the middle drawer and look along the side wall away from the hinges. On a tall unit or a drawer model, look on the left just inside the top drawer. The label shows model and serial number.

A message appears every time I open the door. What does it mean?

The control logged a fault serious enough to show you. The lowest-priority faults are only recorded, others appear when the door opens, and the more serious ones also chime. Photograph the error list on the information screen before you call.

Is a Designer column the same as an Integrated column?

It is the newer generation of the same panel-ready design, with DEC and DET model numbers. We repair both and confirm the model before ordering, since many parts changed.

My Integrated unit may still be under Sub-Zero's sealed-system warranty. Who should I call?

Warranty terms run from the installation date, so check your paperwork. If Sub-Zero's warranty still covers the part, call Sub-Zero first. We are independent, not affiliated with Sub-Zero Group, and repair Integrated columns, tall units, drawers and Designer models once warranty no longer applies.
