Luxury Appliance Repair in Corona del Mar

Corona del Mar fits a lot of kitchen onto small lots. Rebuilt homes on the flower streets run panel-ready columns and refrigerator drawers, the hillside and bluff-top neighborhoods mix remodeled kitchens with older built-ins, and all of it breathes beach air. Corona del Mar homes and kitchens

Corona del Mar is part of Newport Beach, but its housing is its own, and two patterns account for most of the built-in kitchens here.

The village and the flower streets. Lots between the coast highway and the beach are narrow, and many older cottages have given way to two-story homes that fill the lot. Kitchens in those homes are designed around panel-ready equipment: an Integrated refrigerator column paired with a freezer column, refrigerator or freezer drawers in the island, an undercounter wine unit, a steam oven and an induction or gas cooktop. There is rarely any space around the units.

The hills and bluffs. Neighborhoods such as Shore Cliffs, Cameo Shores, Harbor View Hills and Spyglass Hill were mostly built in the second half of the last century and have been remodeled since. Some of these homes still have 500 series and 600 series built-ins, and the occasional older unit, next to newer Wolf ranges and Miele dishwashers.

What that means for service

Floor-level grilles in a sandy house

What it usually is: Integrated columns and drawers draw their cooling air through the toe-kick grille, right where sand, floor dust and pet hair collect. A blocked grille starves the condenser, and the unit runs long and warm.

What you can check: keep rugs and mats away from the grille, and with the power off, vacuum it every couple of months.

What we do: clean the condenser behind the grille, check the fan, and confirm the unit recovers. See Integrated repair.

Heavy panels and tight openings

What it usually is: a custom wood or metal panel adds weight to every door and drawer, and over the years hinges, closers and drawer slides wear. A door that no longer pulls itself shut lets warm, humid air in, and frost or sweating follows.

What you can check: that each door and drawer closes fully on its own and the gasket lies flat.

What we do: adjust or replace the worn hinge, closer or slide. More in door not closing.

Older built-ins in older homes

What it usually is: a 500 series that has run for thirty years or more, or a 600 series past twenty, needing a fan, a defrost part, door hardware, a thermostat (500 series) or a sensor or control board (600 series).

What you can check: note the model and serial numbers from the rating tag inside the unit.

What we do: tell you which parts can still be found before you spend more than the visit. See vintage Sub-Zero repair.

Corona del Mar appliance repair: questions

Do you have to remove the custom panels to repair a panel-ready column?

Rarely. Most repairs on an Integrated column are done from the front through the toe-kick and the interior, with the unit in its opening and the panels on the doors.

Our old Sub-Zero still has R-12. What does that mean for a repair?

R-12 is no longer made, so a leak or compressor repair often means converting the sealed system to a current refrigerant, a bigger job. Fans, thermostats and defrost parts often have current equivalents, but original-fit gaskets and some door parts may no longer be made, so we check the model and serial first.

We plan to remodel in a year or two. Should we still repair the refrigerator?

A modest repair usually is, and a large one usually is not. You get the written price before you decide.

Why does the refrigerator drawer in our island run warm?

Most often the grille at floor level is blocked, or a drawer is not closing fully because of a worn slide or something caught behind it. If both look fine, the fan or sensor needs a technician.

Can you work on an island refrigerator drawer without removing the countertop?

Usually. The drawers come out, the machinery is behind the toe-kick grille, and for bigger jobs the technician slides the whole unit forward out of its opening, leaving the countertop in place.
