Sub-Zero Water Dispenser Not Working
A Sub-Zero dispenser that gives no water is most often locked, timed out after a big fill, short of water from the filter, or frozen. If the ice maker in the same unit still makes ice, the house supply is fine and the fault is on the dispenser side: its valve, the tank and line to the spout, or the switch, panel and control that call for water.
$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
In short: look for a lock icon, Sabbath mode or an H2 LO message first; each one stops the dispenser on purpose. Then check the filter and the water valve. A dispenser that sputters after a filter change has air in it.
Which Sub-Zero models have a water dispenser
The parts involved depend on where the water comes out, so the model number on the tag inside the unit is the first thing we ask for.
- Door ice and water dispenser on Classic side-by-sides ending in SD, such as the BI-42SD and BI-48SD, and the current CL4250SD and CL4850SD. The BI models use a touch panel in the door.
- Internal ice and water dispenser inside the refrigerator on Classic side-by-sides ending in SID, with push paddles instead of a touch panel.
- Internal water-only dispenser on the left wall of the refrigerator on Classic over-and-under and French door models ending in ID, such as the BI-36UID and BI-36UFDID. You press the glass against a pad below the spout.
- Integrated models ending in ID, such as the IC-30RID and IC-36RID, with a water tank behind the rear cover of the refrigerator section and a dispenser switched from the touchscreen.
- 600 series side-by-sides with a door dispenser, the 680 and 690 and later the 685 and 695.
Owner checks before you call
- Is the dispenser locked? Door dispensers on Classic SD models have a child lock that disables every key. A red key icon means it is on; touch and hold the LIGHT key for about five seconds to turn it off.
- Is it switched off? On Integrated models the water dispenser has its own icon on the options screen. If it is not dark, the dispenser is off.
- Check for Sabbath mode. It stops water on purpose, along with ice. If the Classic display reads SA, switch Sabbath off and try the dispenser again.
- Watch for H2 LO. On Classic side-by-sides with a dispenser (SD and SID models) after serial 4380000, a very large or very long draw, such as filling a stockpot, makes the display show H2 LO and pauses the dispenser for 45 minutes to guard against a flood. Wait it out.
- Keep the touch keys clean and dry. The door panel keys sense your finger rather than move, and a wet or greasy panel may not respond.
- Check the filter and the valve. An overdue filter turns the flow into a trickle, and a new one that is not seated stops it. Make sure the supply valve is fully open.
- Look at the refrigerator setting. If it is set at the very bottom of its range, the water tank or line can freeze.
Air in the line after a filter change
New filters and any plumbing work leave air in the tank and lines. The dispenser spits, runs slowly, or seems dead for the first few seconds. Clear the air in short bursts rather than one long run. On Classic units after serial 4380000, three runs of about a minute each, with a pause between, push the air out without setting off the H2 LO pause. Classic units built before serial 4100000 were purged with one longer run of about three minutes. Some cloudiness in the first glasses is air and clears on its own.
What it usually turns out to be
Once the settings and the filter are ruled out, the next question is whether the ice maker still works, because both draw water through the same supply and filter.
Clogged filter or low water pressure
What it usually is: an overdue filter, sediment and scale from hard water, or an under-sink RO system whose storage tank has run low. Both the dispenser and the ice maker slow down together. Classic units light a filter icon when it is due; Integrated models track it on the touchscreen.
What you can check: the filter date, and whether the flow improves with a new filter.
What we do: measure the flow at the unit and check the shutoff and metering parts inside the refrigerator that feed both the ice maker and the dispenser.
Frozen line or tank
What it usually is: water standing in the tank or line can freeze when the refrigerator runs much colder than its setting, when cold air blows straight onto the tank, or, on door dispensers, where the line passes close to the freezer. Ice keeps coming, water does not, and it may return for a while after the doors have been open.
What you can check: the refrigerator temperature. Frozen milk or lettuce near the back points the same way; see refrigerator too cold.
What we do: thaw the line safely and fix the reason: a sensor reading wrong, an air flow problem or a heater that has failed.
Dispenser water valve
What it usually is: the dispenser has its own valve, separate from the ice maker valve, often on the same assembly. When its coil fails or its screen scales up, the dispenser stops while the ice maker carries on.
What you can check: whether ice still comes. Nothing at the valve itself; it carries line voltage.
What we do: confirm which side has failed while the ice side keeps working, then replace the valve and check every fitting for drips before the kickplate or trim goes back.
Paddle, pad, touch panel or dispenser assembly
What it usually is: a small switch behind the paddle or pad on internal dispensers, the touch panel on door dispensers, or the cable that links the door panel to the main board. Classic units log a fault when the main control stops hearing from the door panel or a dispenser valve stops responding; see Classic Series error codes.
What you can check: whether the dispenser light comes on when you press. A light with no water points at the valve or line; no response at all points at the switch, panel or cable.
What we do: read the fault history, test the switch and the signal, and replace what failed. A door panel is made for one model family, so we confirm the exact part and how long it takes to arrive before you approve the repair.
Dispenser that drips or will not stop
What it usually is: a few drops after use are normal. A steady drip, or water that keeps running, means a valve that is not closing or a key that is sticking. Classic units log a fault when water has run for the maximum time.
What you can check: close the water supply valve if it will not stop, and put a towel under the dispenser.
What we do: replace the valve or the switch and check for water inside the door or cabinet. See Sub-Zero leaking water.
If ice will not dispense either
On door dispensers, ice comes down a chute from the freezer. If ice fails along with water, start with the ice maker; see ice maker not working. If the bucket is full but nothing comes out, the auger motor, the chute door motor or a jammed clump of ice is the usual cause. Classic units log a fault when the auger motor stops responding or the chute door does not open or close in time; a clump of ice usually logs nothing. Our September 2026 job in Irvine, Thermador Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Not Working, shows how that kind of diagnosis goes on a built-in.
Stay safe. If the dispenser runs on its own or water appears inside the door or under the unit, close the water supply valve and leave it closed until the visit. Do not pry at the dispenser panel or door trim, and do not chip ice out of the chute with a knife.
What the repair costs
The $79 visit covers the trip and the diagnosis of the dispenser side, and it comes off the repair once you approve the written price. Valve repairs fall under the water valve row; a dispenser panel or tank is quoted after the diagnosis because it varies by model.

Sub-Zero water dispenser: questions
What does H2 LO mean on my Sub-Zero?
On Classic Series dispenser models, it means the control stopped the dispenser after a large or very long draw, to guard against a flood. It clears by itself after 45 minutes. If it appears when little water was drawn, a key or valve may be sticking.
Why does my dispenser sputter after I changed the filter?
Air is trapped in the new filter, the tank and the lines. Run water in several one-minute bursts until the flow is smooth.
Why is the water flow so slow?
Start with the filter date. If a new filter does not help and the ice cubes are small too, the problem is the house supply that feeds both; see ice maker not working for the hard water and RO notes.
My ice maker works but the water dispenser does not. Why?
Then the supply and filter are fine. The cause is the dispenser valve, a frozen line or tank, or the dispenser switch or panel.
How do I unlock the Sub-Zero dispenser?
On Classic door dispensers, touch and hold the LIGHT key for about five seconds until the red key icon goes out. On Integrated models, turn the dispenser on from the options screen.
How often should the water filter be changed?
About once a year, or sooner with heavy use; the unit counts both time and water. Change it when the filter reminder appears, then reset the reminder.
Do you fix dispensers on older 600 series units?
Yes, on the 680, 690, 685 and 695. Some parts for those years are harder to find, and we confirm what is available before any work starts.
